Different Definitions of Good Health Free Essays

In this section I would be focusing on the ways people interpret health and welfare. Health is defined differently by individual, communities and countries, these ways may be defined either positive or negative. The World Health Organisation The World Health Organisation (WHO) had defined health in being â€Å"a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. We will write a custom essay sample on Different Definitions of Good Health or any similar topic only for you Order Now † This definition is a negative approach to health because the definition is vague and can categorised everyone as being unhealthy. In my opinion I find the WHO definition in being unrealistic and unachievable because the definition states, â€Å"absence of disease or infirmity.† As human being we all have one point in our health had gotten the flu. The WHO excluding ‘disease’ and ‘infirmity’ would classify us all as being unhealthy. Another reason why I disagree with this definition is that someone with a disease or illness can maintain a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being. For example, a patient with diabetes would still be in a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being. Not everyone with a disease or illness would lose their complete state of physical, mental and social well-being. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=RvGXLF3uxd0Cpg=PA41lpg=PA41dq=seedhouse+health+a+commoditysource=blots=f4etwSpSrAsig=m9CREsjnSqFb0QcahH_mhwPlNO8hl=ensa=Xei=0IMyVM2eG87PaLeigZAI#v=onepageq=seedhouse%20health%20a%20commodityf=false (accessed on 09/10/2015) http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d4163 (accessed on 09/10/2015) David Seedhouse 2009 David Seedhouse described health and welfare being an â€Å"equivalent to the set of conditions that enable a person to work to fulfil his/her realistic chosen and biological potential†. The definition is positive approach to health because Seedhouse states â€Å"work to fulfil his/her realistic chosen and biological potential.† This would give us the idea that health is a normal process and illnesses can occur without our will. There are a majority of individuals unfortunately that inherit diseases that may have incredible result on how they carry on with their ordinary life. For example a person with a hearing or visual impairment may fulfil his/her potential in exam within the physical constraints would not be considered unhealthy because the person may not hear or see very well. Although Seedhouse definition is vague, I agree with the concept of it; healthier people are more able to do what they desire because they have fewer constraints. The constraints can be psychological, biological or social. A biological constraint can be our organs, cells or tissues. Whilst a psychological constraint can be emotions, cognitions and motivation. A social constraint is our family, friends, community and society. http://www.ukessays.com/essays/health/defining-what-health-is.php#ixzz3o61QlKFV (accessed on 09/10/2015) http://www.moteclife.co.uk/docs/Education/Concept%20of%20Health.pdf (accessed on 09/10/2015) http://heapro.oxfordjournals.org/content/13/1/87.full.pdf (accessed on 09/10/2015) Channel 4 Channel 4 defines health in three ways; negative, positive and holistic. According to Channel 4 the negative definition of health is â€Å"free from illness, upset, tiredness, or anything else that might be a symptom of not being in good health.† This isn’t an accurate definition for health in my opinion because if you are upset doesn’t mean you are not in â€Å"good health.† Majority of people are upset for a short period of time, so stating that being upset, which is an emotion, as bad health is not truthful. Benedict Carey had stated that tears are good for reducing our stress levels, removes toxins, kills bacteria, releases our feelings and surprisingly helps us see. This further proves that being upset is good for our health. Positive health is defined by Channel 4 as someone informing another person â€Å"who has recently taken up a sport and say: ‘you look very healthy’. This definition demonstrates the effectiveness of taking up a spo rt because of the words â€Å"very healthy† helps draw that picture. Read also Six Dimensions of Health Worksheet I would agree with this definition for health because exercising benefits us and improves our health. This is because in situation where someone would need to run or defend themselves, it would be essential to exercise. Taking up a sport would also benefit a person emotionally and socially because team work can increase social circle, have more friends, and emotionally can lower stress level. Channel 4 defines holistic as being â€Å"physically very fit and free from illness, they could still have emotional problems.† This meaning that in order to be healthy you would need to be ‘physically fit’ and have no illnesses, such as the flu or diabetes. I agree with that you would need to be physically fit because exercising or taking up a sport would help strengthen the body and lower the risk of diseases, such as coronary heart disease and cancer. http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/beyondblue/2011/02/7-ways-tears-and-crying-heal.html (accessed on 09/10/2015) http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/Whybeactive.aspx (accessed on 09/10/2015) http://www.channel4learning.com/sites/gcsease/health_social/2_1_detail.html (accessed on 09/10/2015) Medical News Today Medical News Today (MNT) had defined health in two aspect; mental health and physical health. According to MNT mental health â€Å"refers to the absence of mental illness.† Although the definition is vague, it still is a positive definition of health because it defines mental health in being without a disorder. If someone can cope with the usual stresses of life, they can work efficiently and productively and is able to support their community means they have good mental health. An example would be a student coping with exams. MNT also defines physical health in a positive way because the definition states that physical health is the â€Å"regular physical activity (exercise), good nutrition, and adequate rest.† I agree with the definition because nutrition, rest and exercise is essential for good health. If someone doesn’t eat a balance diet, they are more likely to be malnourished. Regular exercise is important since it benefits people socially, mentally and physical. In this case our body would be healthier and stronger. An adequate rest is essential for work effort because the correct hours of sleep would result on better work effort. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/150999.php (accessed on 09/10/2015) Culture Health The word culture is associated with the norms and values that are shared in a particular group or society. These norms and values can shape our views on what is acceptable and what is not. For example; Somalia culture forbids people from drinking alcohol, whilst it is seen perfectly alright in Czech Republic to drink an excessive amount of alcohol. This is negative definition of health because of the affect alcohol has on a person’s physical, emotional and social development. There has been research to show that the ethnic minority groups in Britain experience disadvantages and discrimination when receiving treatment in a healthcare setting, such as hospitals. They would experience poorer health, which would reduce their health expectancy and have more of a risk in long-term health problems, such as sickle cell. The government had set up health campaigns, like Change 4 Life, which aims to tackle obesity in households with children. However, the information presented in health campaigns has a lack of knowledge and understandings for other cultures. How to cite Different Definitions of Good Health, Papers

Women of The Underdogs Essay Example For Students

Women of The Underdogs Essay Mariano Azuela’s novel. The Underdogs. is a male-dominated novel. The narrative of the feats and wartime escapades of a rebel set during the Mexican Revolution is chiefly driven by work forces ; the bulk of the characters are work forces who are separated from their households and lives and who are contending for a cause in which they strongly believe ( at least at the beginning of the novel ) . Despite the masculine narrative. nevertheless. there are two extremely developed and important female characters in The Underdogs. These adult females. Camila and War Paint. are a representation of two of the functions adult females played during the Mexican Revolution. While the portrayals Azuela pigments of these adult females and their function in society and revolution are improbably accurate. he does pretermit the explore the other avenues of engagement that adult females had in the revolution. Thus. Azuela semi-accurately portrays the functions that adult females played in the re volution during this clip through the characters of Camila and War Paint. We will write a custom essay on Women of The Underdogs specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Through these two adult females. the modern reader can accomplish a sense of understanding as to two of the primary functions that adult females played during the revolution in the early twentieth century. Camila is a immature adult females who embodies a chiefly domestic function. supplying comfort. attention and shelter to the Rebel soldiers as so many adult females did during this clip in Mexican history. War Paint provides a blunt contrast to the mild Camila ; as her name suggests. she is a ferocious and hardened warrior. a soldadera. Her function in the revolution is much different: she really joins the ranks of the Rebel set led by Demetrio Macias. and battles alongside the work forces. While the two adult females are extremely developed characters who accurately represent the part of society from which they come. there are many adult females who participated in the revolution whose functions did non fall into the â€Å"domestic† and â€Å"warrior† classs. Many adult females were journalists. lobbyists. and propagandists ; some were nurses. be givening to the hurt exterior of their places ; some even participated in spiritual protesting. Therefore. while Camila and War Paint’s functions in Azuela’s portraiture of the Mexican Revolution are accurate and well-developed. there is a much larger image of women’s functions that is losing from the novel. Womans in Mexican Society: Pre-Revolution In order to efficaciously understand how women’s functions in Mexican society changed during the Mexican Revolution. we must analyze the social outlooks of women’s behaviour before this disruptive clip in their history. Womans in Mexico between the 18th and 19th centuries experienced many alterations as the enlightenment swept across Europe and impacted Spain. Were adult females merely good for bring forthing kids and caring for a hubby? The reply to this inquiry was in the procedure of being determined even every bit early as the eighteenth century. In the late 1700’s. little stairss were taken to reform the intervention and outlooks of adult females. Education. even if improbably limited direction was to be had. became more accessible to adult females populating in urban countries ; alterations were made in order to let adult females to come in the work force ; adult females were even pushed and encouraged to fall in in the battle for independency. As with many states during this clip. women’s rights had been limited for centuries. so the alterations that were made in Mexico during the Enlightenment allowed adult females to interrupt free of the cast that society had placed upon them and research other avenues. They could work outside of the place. have an instruction. and take part in political relations. even if it was to a limited extent. Many adult females did take part in the wars of independency. offering their services for the benefit of the state. After the freedom was eventually achieved. adult females were expected to return to their private domains and traditional functions ; that is. raising a household. maintaining a place. and caring for a hubby. However. many adult females did non wish to return to their old lives ; they continued organizing organisations. subscribing requests. and trying to demo the authorities how valuable their parts to society could be. They seem to hold succeeded. at least limitedly ; the authorities seemed to acknowledge that adult females could be valuable social participants. but made accommodations to the ways that they would be allowed to take part. Education was oriented toward the place and household. organisations and requests set up by females remained entirely for adult females. and the similar. Regardless of developments in the authorities. nevertheless. adult females did go on to raise and foster their households and serve their communities as they had prior to the wars of independency. .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 , .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .postImageUrl , .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 , .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:hover , .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:visited , .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:active { border:0!important; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:active , .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79 .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u417a06a5aab34c43ee7d2ed02cc55e79:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Atomic Bomb 8 EssayBy the clip the Mexican Revolution began. adult females were ready to be recognized to the full for their endowments and abilities. While many adult females chose to remain behind the scenes and attention for the soldiers on the out of boundss. like Camila in The Underdogs. there were every bit as many adult females who chose to actively take part in the revolution. Womans such as War Paint chose to go combatants. while others followed less unsafe waies ( although many were every bit as extremist ) . Despite the fact that Camila and War Paint are both accurate representations of the adult females who chose the same waies during the revolution. there are still many different functions that adult females played during this clip that Azuela does non admit. Womans in The Underdogs: Is It Enough? Even though Camila and War Paint’s narratives are woven throughout the â€Å"bigger picture† of Azuela’s novel. their characters are meticulously developed and show readers how adult females within their functions in society and revolution were expected to act ( and how they really behaved ) . Camila is present throughout the full narrative ; if non in individual. than in name. She is the domestic. mild miss who stays on the out of boundss of the conflicts and passively delaies for injured. hungry or dog-tired soldiers to demo up on her doorsill and let her to care for them. War Paint. on the other manus. has a wild personality and refuses to allow her life be dictated by outside influences ; she joins the Rebel set as a combatant. non a caretaker. There were existent adult females who would hold embodied the features of War Paint and Camila and participated in the same or similar activities during the revolution. but there were besides many other adult females who did nil of the kind. Thus. Azuela could hold done a much better occupation portraying. or at least adverting. the other types of opposition and engagement of adult females in the revolution. War Paint and Camila’s functions in the revolution and society environing it. nevertheless. do give readers a semi-accurate portrayal of some things that adult females were making to take part in civilization and society during this clip in Mexican history. Camila: Womans in Society during the Revolution Camila. the domestic. first appears after Demetrio Macias has been wounded in a battle. The Rebels carry their leader on a stretcher to a little small town. where they expect Camila and the other adult females to take attention of him and nurse him back to wellness. Azuela introduces Camila as an obedient miss who follows tradition and conforms to the outlooks environing her function in society as a adult female. After Macias is brought into her small town. A really friendly miss brought a jicara filled with bluish H2O. Demetrio grabbed the calabash with his trembling custodies and drank avidly. â€Å"Want any more? † Demetrio raised his eyes: the immature adult female had a really ordinary face. but her voice was filled with much sugariness. Camila is a typical small town miss. carry throughing her responsibility of supplying attention to the soldiers who show up on her doorsill. The immature miss shortly becomes infatuated with Luis Cervantes. though he does non return the fondness. and Macias desires for Camila to go his lover. After the Rebels leave her small town. she disappears from the narrative until Macias decides to direct for her. She does so go his lover at this point. siting along with the Rebel set and supplying Macias with the amenitiess he asks of her ; nevertheless. she is non precisely the most convenient individual to be labeling along with the set. as she cries on a regular basis and is invariably acquiring into statements with War Paint. Camila is finally stabbed after an statement with War Paint. which devastates Macias. who so turns all of his attempts to contending. Camila embodies the features of the domestic adult female in Mexican society during the revolution. By the clip the Mexican Revolution began. 80 % of the population of Mexico lived in rural countries untouched by the modernisation that occurred in urban countries ; therefore. the bulk of adult females were housewifes. farmers’ married womans. or sellers at small town markets. selling flowers. veggies. or nutrient to hungry travellers. Many adult females who lived in these rural countries chose non to contend were frequently forced to offer their places. nutrient. and organic structures for the comfort of those contending for the Rebel cause. Supplying attention to the work forces of the revolution was non the lone function that adult females played. nevertheless. Some adult females joined the ranks as combatants. every bit good. War Paint: Women’s Functions in the Revolution As the lone female warrior presented in the novel. War Paint is proven to be one of the most plucky and hotheaded characters. The first description that Azuela gives of her shows her wild spirit and non-conformist attitude: .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 , .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .postImageUrl , .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 , .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:hover , .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:visited , .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:active { border:0!important; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:active , .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250 .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u421d6e56b83e6f8bac59467f9f857250:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The modern world Essayâ€Å"Are you Demetrio Macias. so? † asked the immature adult female all of a sudden. spliting in from atop the saloon. singing her legs and tapping Demetrio on the dorsum with her coarse leather places. â€Å"At your service. † he replied. hardly turning his caput about. Indifferent. she continued traveling her exposed legs. demoing off her bluish stockings. War Paint’s debut to the narrative is a complete contrast to the immature and mild Camila. who seems. for the most portion. to obey the outlooks of adult females from anterior to the Mexican Revolution. War Paint refuses to bow to pre-revolution criterions for adult females and alternatively nowadayss herself in the complete opposite visible radiation: as a Rebel. She is perfectly successful in this enterprise. and really becomes one of the Rebel combatants. As a female combatant. she is known as a soldadera ; these adult females were among the first of their race and civilization to fall in ranks with work forces and battle for a cause. Many adult females chose to follow the same way as War Paint and becomes soldaderas. These female soldiers were foremost developed during the wars of independency as adult females joined the ranks of soldiers to fix nutrient. rinse their vesture. and assist to take attention of them when they were injured. During the Mexican Revolution. they traveled around with the Rebel bands that their hubbies or lovers belonged to. frequently take parting in the combat themselves. War Paint fits this description: she joins the Rebel set with the adult male she loves. Towhead Margarito ( though she is besides attracted to Macias ) . Artists and authors during this period frequently portrayed these soldaderas as heroes. making pictures ( and. for writers like Azuela. characters like War Paint ) and even vocals that were sung about female combatants. While this was non the most popular avenue for adult females populating in Mexico during the revolution. there were still many that did take this way of rebellion. alternatively of a less unsafe one. Other Women’s Roles during the Mexican Revolution As was antecedently stated. Camila and War Paint. while their characters do embody two of the big functions that adult females played during the Mexican Revolution. are non representative of their full sex. Aside from going soldaderas to fall in in the combat or remaining place to be given to soldiers that needed attention. there were many other activities that adult females participated in to demo their support for the revolution. Womans were active participants in countries such as news media. where they would compose about the revolution and its effects on society ; they would propagandise and protest to promote other work forces and adult females to fall in in the opposition ; some of the educated adult females became nurses on the front lines of the combat and on the place forepart ( similar to Camila’s function ) . Some adult females participated in opposition groups. assisting to garner ammo and weaponries and transport them to those contending. every bit good as execut ing messenger undertakings and espionage. Many of the in-between and upper-class adult females who lived in urban countries off from the combat avoided engagement wholly. Prior to the revolution. adult females were merely get downing to emerge as of import members of society and some were make bolding plenty to force the bounds of what was deemed â€Å"acceptable† female behaviour. While many adult females of the revolution chose to conform to those outlooks and go the caretakers of the soldiers. like Camila. there were many more like War Paint who fought against them. They were non merely soldaderas. They did much more than that. but Azuela doesn’t reference them in The Underdogs. The adult females of the Mexican Revolution were active participants in many more Fieldss than merely the two that Azuela portrayed through Camila and War Paint. While his female characters do demo how domestic adult females and soldaderas were active participants in the revolution. he neglects to demo merely to what extent adult females in general really engaged in the revolution. Readers get a good sense of the function of the domestic caretaker and the female combatant. but learn nil about the nurses. protestors. propagandists. journalists. and the similar from his novel. Human Rights and Amnesty International essays

Human Rights and Amnesty International essays In 1961, London lawyer Peter Benenson read about a group of students in Portugal who were arrested and jailed for raising a toast to freedom in a public restaurant. This incident prompted him to launch a one-year campaign called "Appeal for Amnesty 1961" in the London Observer. The "Appeal for Amnesty" called for the release of all people imprisoned because of peaceful expression of their beliefs, politics, race, religion, color, or national origin. Benenson called these people, "prisoners of conscience." He planned to encourage people to write letters to government officials in countries, which had prisoners of conscience, calling for their release. The campaign grew enormously, spread to other countries, and by the end of 1961 the organization, Amnesty International, had been formed. Amnesty International's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. In pursuit of this vision, Amnesty International's mission is to undertake research and action focussed on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights. I believe that this mission statement is compatible with Catholic social teaching. Amnesty International addresses governments, intergovernmental organizations, armed political groups, companies, and other non-state actors. Amnesty International seeks to disclose human rights abuses accurately, quickly and persistently. It systematically and impartially researches the facts of individual cases and patterns of human rights abuses. These findings are publicised, and members, supporters and of amnesty international staff mobilize public pressure on governments and others to stop the abuses. In addition to its work on specific vio...

Yale wrote an entire essay on what it looks for in its students. Yale puts a lot of weight into your high school transcript, so you’ll need to achieve great grades consistently. Your high school teachers will also speak to your academic ability - your letters of recommendation should show that you’re hardworking and academically curious. Use your essays as an opportunity to paint a vivid portrait of yourself, one that goes beyond your academic performance. Highlight your interests and make yourself seem like a real person, not just a collection of numbers. What you’ll do with Yale’s resources: Yale wants students who will take advantage of its many resources. Your application should demonstrate that you’re ready to take on challenges and that you take grab opportunities when you see them. Yale’s early action program is a single choice early action program, which means that you can only apply to one school (Yale) but your acceptance isn’t binding. Statistically, you do have a slightly higher chance of getting into Yale early action than at the regular decision deadline, but the difference is not that significant. If Yale isn’t your first choice, we wouldn’t recommend applying there early, since you won’t be able to apply early anywhere else. Yale requires you to send in all of your SAT scores, but the committee is able to look at a student's highest officially reported score on each section of the SAT. If you don’t have a 1540+ on the SAT yet, you need to seriously reconsider taking the test to get as close to that score as possible. Make a plan, commit to studying, and work hard. That being said, 33 is still high and if you have lower than a 31 on the ACT, you should consider retaking the exam. If you’re applying to the engineering school, you’ll have to answer an additional prompt. Let’s take a look at the three prompts. Then, we’ll talk about who needs to answer them. Think about an idea or topic that has been intellectually exciting for you. Why are you drawn to it? Reflect on your engagement with a community to which you belong. How do you feel you have contributed to this community? Yale students, faculty, and alumni engage issues of local, national, and international importance. Discuss an issue that is significant to you and how your college experience might help you address it. If you’re applying with the Common Application, you’ll choose two of those prompts and answer them in 250 words or fewer. If you’re applying with the Coalition Application, you’ll answer one prompt in 300 words or fewer. You’ll also include an audio, video, image, or document file that you have created that is meaningful to you and related in some way to your essay. You’ll write one sentence to show how this relates to your essay. Students applying to Yale’s engineering program must also submit the engineering essay as part of their application. Here’s the Yale engineering essay prompt: If you selected one of the engineering majors, please tell us more about what has led you to an interest in this field of study, what experiences (if any) you have had in engineering, and what it is about Yale’s engineering program that appeals to you. Please respond in 300 words or fewer. All applicants will complete six short answer questions regardless of which application you’re using. The six short answer questions for the Yale essays range in word limit from 35 words to 300 words. These essays are specific to the Yale application - you won’t find them on any other college or university’s application. Although they are short, the Yale supplement essays are just as important as the longer essays. Research essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Research - Essay Example Indeed, the humors lie in the verbal ironies in the story. At the very beginning of the story, the readers learn about the revenge motif of Montressor (Silverman 312). So, when, in the story, they come across the verbal ironies in Montressor’s narration, they rather become aware of the follies, simplicity and hubris, of Fortunato, which inevitably push him towards the horrible death. Also the humors in the story are endowed with a two-fold meaning. On one hand, they provide brutal pleasure to Montressor; on the other hand, they reveal Fortunato’s follies and hubris. Montressor exhibits a black sense of humor. In the very beginning of the story, Montressor describes Fortunato in a jester’s outfit. He describes Fortunato as following: â€Å"[In] one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend†¦.The man wore motley† (Poe pars.2). In that carnival evening, Fortunato wear a â€Å"tight-fitting parti-striped dres s† (Poe pars.2). He also wears a â€Å"canonical cap and bells† (Poe pars.3). ... But when Montressor vows that â€Å"I must not only punish but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong† (Poe pars.3), Fortunato’s jester-like clothing and hubris make him more vulnerable and pathetic. Another humor occurs around the middle of the story. When Montressor and Fortunato enter into the cavern, he (Fortunato) begins to cough. In order to hide his intention, Montressor tries to persuade Fortunato to go back: â€Å"We will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back† (Poe pars.6). In reply, Fortunato says, â€Å"Enough†¦the cough's a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.† (Poe pars.8) Here though his reply evokes laughter, it, at the sam e time, warns the readers about his helplessness in the face of Montressor conspiracy. Fortunato, a helpless drunkard who does not know the least of Montressor’s revenge, expresses habitual hubris that he will not die of coughing. This scene makes Montressor more pernicious and venomous, whereas this same reply exposes Fortunato more as a helpless man who simply believes Montressor and who is going to face his death soon (Silverman 312). At the second reading of the story, the perception that Fortunato is going to be buried alive behind the vault wall reveals the darkness and blackness of Montressor’s sense of humor. The blackest humorous scene occurs around the end of the story. Here, Fortunato starts to laugh after

Continuum of care for maternal, newborn, and child health in Australia Essay - 1

Continuum of care for maternal, newborn, and child health in Australia - Essay Example The failure of the maternal health usually leads to the death of the infants (World Health Organization, 2013, p. 67). The death of the mother denies the infant the maternal care, which is essential in the growth and development of the child. Additionally, the mothers who fall sick during pregnancy are at risk of infecting their children. Therefore, the pregnant mothers ought to be offered antenatal healthcare services for the welfare of both the mother and the child. Australian maternal care involves skilled birth professionals. Guenther and Vittori (2008, p. 79) claim that the engagement of skilled personnel in midwifery prevents newborn and mother deaths during delivery. The offered health care services also enhance access to nutritious food for the children, which helps the children gain natural immunity against a wide array of diseases (Palmer and Short, 2010, p. 36). The Australian medical authority also has programs, which enlighten mothers on better and hygienic practices of caring for children. According to Lewis (2009, p.83), the maternal healthcare services enable the children to receive early preventive healthcare against diseases like malaria, tetanus, polio and pneumonia. Ideal healthcare services also guarantee exclusive breastfeeding, which affords the children with antibodies (Hally, 2008, p. 57). The antibodies are instrumental in the natural protection of the children from many infections. The healthcare for the mothers and children in Australia incorporates oral rehydration. The rehydration is fundamental in preventing diarrhea

The Age of The Renaissance :: The Renaissance

The Middle Ages is considered by many historians a time period of ignorance, where little or no advancements took place. The church was the center of attention, and instead of a philosophical view of the world, beliefs were centered around superstitions. On the other hand, the rebirth of education and advancements that followed the Middle Ages and was labeled as the Renaissance. There have been arguments as to whether the Renaissance is actually a separate time period, or instead, just a high point of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance was definitely a distinct era. Inspiration from the ancient Greek and Roman people led to humanism beliefs and encouraged man to become multi-talented. Therefore, the Renaissance man, a man who excelled in many areas, became prominent. Also, the ideals of the people changed, and religion no longer ruled their lives. Advancements in all aspects of life virtually improved. Thus, many aspects lead to the change from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, a ti me period that was undoubtedly distinct from the Middle Ages. During the Renaissance, ideas and beliefs changed greatly. Humanism, a crucial movement to the Renaissance, stressed secular ideas and beliefs and the importance of advocating human’s ideas and values. The movement drew inspiration from the ancient Greek and Roman people. Therefore, classical education began to circulate once again (document 1). The people of the Middle Ages had great amounts of ignorance and believed in faith and false ideas while focusing on childish possessions, but during the Renaissance these ignorant beliefs disappeared and humanism took its place (document 2). The church was no longer the center of life for many and some lost interest in the traditional beliefs that the church was preaching. Yet, it was still an important aspect. The church had lost large amounts of power and wealth due to the humanism movement because people became less reliable on the church and could think and follow ideals on their own. But, the church was rapidly changing during this time period also, because religion was focused on wealth and the money it could obtain (document 5). Instead, many supported the idea that the people who held secular beliefs should be ruled by noblemen that were scholarly, highly educated, and not only concerned with goods (document 5). Entirely new ideas and beliefs began to circulate during the Renaissance, and the church lost much of its great influence.

Strengths Paper

â€Å" A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better. †~ Jim Rohn Throughout history, people have needed leaders to help them handle certain situations and work through problems. Anybody can become a leader, but first they must determine what their strengths are. There is now a test that one can take online that outlines their five top strengths and explains in detail what each one means. It varies for each person that takes it, but my top five strengths are achiever, adaptability, strategic, restorative, and relator. The first of my strengths is achiever. This means that whenever I start something, I like to finish it and generally do whatever it takes to reach that goal. My second strength, adaptability, in a way, ties into the first one. Adaptability means being able to approach problems from different angles and finding new ways to complete things when one idea doesn't work. I feel like these two strengths relate to me pretty well. I do not like to leave projects open ended whenever I start them and I'm usually pretty good at ‘rolling with the punches. These two allow me to tackle situations in a variety of ways and leave me with plenty of the proverbial â€Å"plan B's† in case any of the first attempts do not work properly. My third strength, strategic, also aids my ability to work through problems. This particular strength allows me to think about the situation fully before jumping into it. Once I figure out what's happening, I can come up with a plan that best suites the circumstances and work on accomplishing it. By nature, I have found out that I more of a planner.I like to lay things out in my head before I start so things run more smoothly once I begin, which works well with my strategic strength. The last two strengths, restorative and relator, confused me for a little bit. I can put myself into other people's shoes easily and I would much rat her mend my broken relationships than burn those bridges, but I wouldn't necessarily put them into my top five. It's not a bad thing by any means, though! As a whole, these five strengths work well together nicely and, in a certain situation, could play off of each other in a very effective way!For example, let's say that I worked at a burger joint downtown. Well, everyone gets hungry and the need to eat usually overwhelms any other feeling that one could have. So, here's the scene: it's a hot summer day and after classes, I decide that I'm going to go get some free food at the restaurant that I work at. Walking in, I know what I want to achieve: I want a big, juicy burger with mustard, ketchup, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and cheese with a side of fresh onion rings. I grill the burger, pull out the buns, and head to the fridge to grab all the condiments.I generally only like to make one trip, so I carry all the items to the table where my burger is waiting. Little did I know that so meone had spilled Coke earlier in the day! As I slip on the spill, the pickles and ketchup fall to the tile in the kitchen and shatter. I have to adapt to the new situation, so I come up with a new strategy. Banana peppers and a little bit of mayo would fill in for the dropped items nicely! I bring all the items over to the table and restore what could have been a disaster.I can now take my delicious lunch outside, find someone that I can relate to, and have a conversation over fresh burgers and crispy onion rings. Everybody has the potential to be a leader. Before they assume this responsibility though, it is best that they find out what their top strengths are so that they can benefit a larger amount of people more effectively through their actions. For me, my top strengths are achiever, adaptability, strategic, restorative, and relator. With these, I can figure out problems, find out ways to solve them, get others input on the subject, and come out of the situation intact.

Examine the Ways in Which Rhys Demonstrates How Women Are...

Examine the ways in which Rhys demonstrates how women are victims of a patriarchal society in Wide Sargasso Sea. A patriarchal society is one whereby men are the decision makers and hold positions of power and prestige. Patriarchy refers to a societal structure whereby men are dominant not in number or in force but in their access to status related power and decision making power. In these societies, women are presented with an interpretation of the world made by men, and a history of the world defined by men’s actions. Rhys presents her interpretation and opinions on first-wave feminism in Wide Sargasso Sea. Second wave feminism and beyond suggests that men exploit women in nearly every aspect of their lives. Radical feminists define†¦show more content†¦According to English custom, Antoinette is financially dependent on Mr Rochester, as he controls all her wealth. In Part Three of the novel where the novel is described from Antoinette’s point of view, she describes the key to the attic where she is kept prisoner as â€Å"the colour of fire and sunset†, indicating that fire is a symbol of power. The novel ends with her dreaming of setting the house on fire, which is the only tool she knows how to use to express her rage. With a candle in her hand, Antoinette claims, â€Å"Now I know why I was brought here and what I have to do†. As she is now stripped of her name and her country, the candle in her hand represents the only empowerment she is able to preserve. By Rhys leaving the novella as a cliff-hanger, and not allowing us to witness the fire, she suggests that patriarchy is too strong to break through and that therefore women cannot fulfil their desires and are destined to be silenced. This idea also portrays Antoinette to be different from the passionate and fiery, extremely feminist, personality she is suggested in other parts of the novella to posses. Wide Sargasso Sea is a three part narrative, the middle part being in the first person voice of Rochester, and the other to being the voice of Antoinette. This narrative structure skews ideals of patriarchy by challenging concepts of narrative authority, particularly of a white male authority, as Rochester is inserted in
